Actor, producer Nia Long of Trinidadian heritage, was born Nitara Carlynn Long on October 30, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York, to Talita Gillman Long, an educator, and printmaker, and Doughtry Long, an educator, and poet. However, she was reared in Los Angeles, California. She has an older sister, Lori Ann Rambough, on her fatherโ€™s side.

Long attended St. Maryโ€™s Academy, a Roman Catholic school for girls in Inglewood, California. After school, she was enrolled in Classical Ballet, jazz, tap, and acting classes. In 1989, she graduated from Westchester High School, a public school in Los Angeles. From 1991 to 1995, Long was the actress, Beulah “Lisa” Wilkes, who portrayed the girlfriend of actor Will Smith on the popular television show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

At the American Black Film Festival in 2000, Long won โ€œStar of the Yearโ€ for her role in the movieย The Best Man Holiday. That year, she also won an award for โ€œOutstanding Actressโ€ inย Best Manย at the BET Comedy Awards. At the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, she received the โ€œOutstanding Actress in a Motion Pictureโ€ award for her character portrayal inย The Best Man. In 2004 and 2005, Long won NAACP Image Awards for โ€œOutstanding Actress in a Drama Seriesโ€ for the crime drama television seriesย Third Watch. In 2014, she also won an American Black Film Festival award for โ€œBest Actressโ€ and โ€œBest Ensemble Castโ€ forย The Best Man Holiday. In addition, she has been nominated for numerous awards, including Black Reel Awards, BET Comedy Awards for โ€œOutstanding Actress,โ€ and โ€œOutstanding Supporting Actressโ€ in the filmsย Alfie, Beaches, Boiler Room, andย Mooz-lum.

In 2020, Long was the principal actor in the psychological thrillerย Fatal Affair about a lawyer, Ellie, and her husband, Marcus, who had a devastating automobile and a long recovery. And in 2021, Long accepted a contract to appear on to ABCโ€™sย Let the World See, where she read excerpts from Mamie Till-Mobleyโ€™s memoirย Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime that Changed America.ย The book described Till-Mobleyโ€™s campaign for justice after her son Emmett Till, was lynched in Money, Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of looking at white women when he was 14.

Nia Long, the mother of two sons, Massai Zhivago Dorsey II, and Kez Sunday Udoka, has worked with Yolanda Adamsโ€™s music video forย This Too Shall Passย and co-directed Ashantiโ€™s music video,ย Baby. She continues to act, direct, produces, and volunteer her time at the Sterling Childrenโ€™s Home, a 21-room residence in St. Philip, Barbados.

Alexander, Library Director at Saint John Vianney College Seminary & Graduate School in Miami, Florida, has also directed academic and public libraries in the District of Columbia, Indiana, Texas, and Virginia. In addition, he has been a library manager in the Virgin Islands of the United States as well as in the Republic of Liberia. His research has appeared in Public Library Quarterly, Scribnerโ€™s Encyclopedia of American Lives, and Virginia Libraries journal. Alexander received the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from the University of the District of Columbia and the Master of Library & Information Science degree from Ball State University. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from International University and studied additionally at Harvard Graduate School of Education Leadership for Academic Librarians, Oberlin Conservatory of Music Voice Performance Pedagogy, and Atlanta University School of Library & Information Studies.
